Destiny Pharma is a pharmaceutical company that has developed and patented a portfolio of drug compounds, (codenamed XF) that have been shown to work in such a way that bacteria are unable to develop resistance to repeated dosing. They are being developed in order to prevent and treat superbugs such as MRSA.
Studies in the UK have indicated that one in ten patients will develop an infection related to their hospital stay. It has been estimated that the annual cost nationally of these infections is almost £1 billion. An increasing number of these infections are caused by bacteria that are resistant to current antibiotics and so are untreatable. The current total cost of antibiotic resistant microbes is estimated at $30bn with 2m patients contracting hospital acquired infections and 90,000 die each year as a result.
Destiny’s lead product is a light activated nasal decolonisation gel. Nasal decolonisation is currently a $500m market dominated by one product that has a poor resistance profile. This is forecast to grow to $3bn market once a product is launched that has a strong resistance profile.
Further products under development are a gel for wounds and ulcers, and a systemic product for treatment of blood stream infections.
